Report difficulties immediately to your dentist. Risks are minimized if patients follow directions and continue to have regular check-ups.
Problems new denture-wearers sometimes report include:
- Difficulty chewing. Eating soft food at first can help you get used to chewing with dentures.
- Slight speech problems. These usually vanish after several days. Practicing reading out loud can help you sound more like your old self. If your speech problems continue, tell your dentist. He/she may adjust your dentures. If all else fails, a speech therapist may be able to help.
- Mouth irritation or sores. These need to be reported to your dentist. They can be caused or worsened by poor diet, alcoholism, lack of proper denture hygiene, and not removing your dentures. See Pain for more information.
- Looseness. You may need your dentures refitted.
- Gagging. Your dentist will help identify the cause.
- Clicking. The dentures may need to be remade or fixed.
