Follow your dentist's instructions to clean and maintain your dentures.
His/her tips may include:
- Handle dentures gently.
- Clean dentures over a basin of water to cushion them if they're dropped.
- Keep dentures in denture cleanser or water when they're not in your mouth.
- Never use hot water on your dentures.
- Take your dentures out for at least eight hours at night, to promote gum health.
- If your dentures become uncomfortable, smell bad, change color, or become stained--call your dentist.
- Your dentist's office can mark dentures with your name or social security number. This helps identify them in case of loss.
- Never repair or try to adjust your own dentures.
- Don't use dental adhesives to glue dentures into your mouth for a prolonged period.
- Remove and brush your dentures daily. Rinse your mouth after each meal.
- If you wear a partial, remove it before brushing your natural teeth.
- Dentures usually last around five years.
You must continue to see your dentist on a regular basis. He/she will check your mouth for problems. Regular check-ups ensure that, as your mouth changes, your dentures continue to fit and serve you well.
