Facial Capillaries: Who Is a Candidate:
Your physician can help you determine whether or not you are a candidate for laser treatment of facial capillaries. If you have an extremely dark complexion, lasers may not be suitable for you. Because much of the laser light is absorbed by skin pigment, darkly pigmented skin may not allow enough light to reach the target vessel. Your doctor may perform a test to determine how well lasers will work with your particular skin type.

A test will also reveal whether you are among the few people whose skin reacts negatively to lasers or if you have an intolerance for the slight stinging sensation experienced during the procedure.

If your facial capillaries were caused by personal habits you are unwilling to change—for instance, if you are a sun worshiper who plans to continue basking as often as possible—you may want to reconsider having laser treatments. Continuing the same habits that caused the problems in the first place will almost ensure their recurrence.

Although very few people will find that laser treatments are contraindicated for them, ideal candidates meet the following criteria.

  • Age less than 65 (because the skin has optimum elasticity)
  • No history of skin hives or scarring
  • Skin that is neither too light nor too dark (for best results)
  • Generally good health, with no unstable medical conditions
  • Willingness to change habits that contributed to the development of facial capillaries
  • Realistic expectations
