During your initial consultation, your physician will give you any instructions you need to prepare for the treatment. Generally, you will be asked to not wear makeup on the days you are being treated. Since tan skin tends to block the effects of laser treatment, sun exposure should be minimized prior to the procedure. You are also likely to be required to take an antiviral medication before the treatment to prevent cold sores. (Lasers can stimulate cold sores, which can then spread and cause scarring.)
