Facial and Body Hair Removal:
Preparing for Treatment
Most facial and body hair removal techniques do not require any preparation. Laser treatment is the exception. You should consult with your dermatologist before scheduling a laser treatment to go over risk factors and the best possible preparation for the procedure. Some doctors will show you a brief educational video about the technique.

For laser treatment, you need to be aware of certain restrictions:

  • Maintain your natural skin color. Tan skin - either from the sun, a tanning salon, or a cream - will not react very well to a laser treatment.

  • Maintain the integrity of your follicles. Ask the doctor for how long before the laser treatment you should refrain from any hair-removal technique, from plucking to electrolysis. It will depend on the area of the body being treated.

For some patients, doctors prescribe an anesthetic cream called Emla Cream, which is applied to the areas that will be treated up to 40 minutes before the procedure begins. The cream effectively numbs the area that will undergo treatment.
