Facial and body hair removal has become increasingly popular, especially within the last two years. Hair removal was never a very complicated procedure, and some of the methods even can be done at home. But today hair removal is accomplished faster than in the recent past, thanks to improvements in technology.
Until relatively recently, people between the ages of 17 and 55 waxed, plucked, bleached and applied depilatory creams, like Nair, to unwanted patches of hair. Temporary treatments, these methods had to be repeated once the hair grew back. Though electrolysis, a more long-term method of hair reduction, has been in place for years, another long-term technique has become more widely used: Laser treatment is a faster method of facial and body hair removal, and it causes less discomfort than electrolysis.
Women comprise the vast majority of hair-removal patients, opting most often to rid their bodies of hair on their upper lip, chin, neck, cheeks, bikini line, legs, underarms and around the navel. Men, 5% of patients, have unsightly hair removed from their back and shoulders. More and more men are taking advantage of the new laser technology that allows these larger areas to be treated quickly, as opposed to a lifetime of electrolysis that could be required to treat a large, hairy back.
Though hair removal is widely practiced and is an elective procedure that carries few risks and causes minimal pain, it is important to be realistic about the results. Most people have to return to their salon or to their doctor's office multiple times to get the desired results. Slightly uneven skin tones can result from a laser treatment. And people with light hair and light skin may not even be a candidate for that method at all.
Yet most people successfully get rid of 80% of unwanted hair and are very happy with their new, often smoother, look.
