| An Orthodontist's Training |
Some general dentists place braces, but they are not specialists in orthodontics. An orthodontist is trained as a general dentist and has completed an additional residency in orthodontics and dento-facial orthopedics for two or three years.
In addition, about 15-20% of orthodontists complete additional exams and presentation of cases to become a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and are referred to as "board certified".
