Braces: Costs
Getting braces isn't mandatory. You could go without them. But you'll never grow out of severe problems. Orthodontics is an investment that will pay off in:

  • increased attractiveness
  • heightened self-confidence
  • easier chewing
  • better dental health
  • fewer headaches
  • a dazzling smile

Discuss costs with your orthodontist at your first visit (sometimes there is a minimal fee for the initial consultation). Many health insurance plans include orthodontics. Financing might be available through the orthodontist's office. Or you might consider a bank loan.

Depending on where you live, the total cost ranges from about $4,000-$6,000. If treatment is brief -- 9 months or less -- the price may be reduced. Most orthodontists require a down payment of about 20 to 30 percent and allow you to spread the balance over the length of treatment. There usually are no finance charges or interest if you pay monthly.

One thing to remember: Money spent on braces today avoids problems tomorrow.

COSTS MAY BE LOWER WITH A NON-CERTIFIED PRACTITIONER – SEE NOTE ABOVE WITH QUESTIONS TO ASK ORTHODONTIST.
