Breast Reduction: Who Is a Candidate?
Women who decide to have breast reduction usually have been troubled by one or more of the following conditions:

  • Breasts that are too large in proportion to the body.
  • Chronic back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of the breasts.
  • Grooves in the shoulders from bra straps.
  • Skin irritation beneath the breasts.
  • Restriction of activity or exercise due to the size and weight of the breasts.
  • Uneven breasts where one is much larger than the other.
  • Self-consciousness about the large breast size.

Breast reduction can be performed at any age on a healthy woman, but plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until the breasts are fully developed. Some women decide to wait to have the surgery until their childbearing is over since childbirth and breastfeeding can cause unpredictable changes to the breasts and breast-feeding may not be possible after breast reduction surgery.
