Because fat is taken from and injected in the same person, the chance of an adverse allergic reaction is eliminated. Thus, an individual who is allergic to collagen, but wants its youth-enhancing results, are good candidates for fat transplantation. People with "contour deformities" may benefit from fat transplantation as well. A contour deformity means a large surface area of skin which is sunken or otherwise uneven as the result of a traumatic injury or surgery, for example.
People with bleeding disorders or diabetics are usually not suitable candidates for this procedure. Also people taking coumadin should avoid fat transplantation. Anyone with an allergy to lidocaine should inform his or her physician of this problem. Also, extremely thin people with inadequate donor fat sites should not undergo this procedure.
Fat injection surgery involves two steps—withdrawing the fat, then reinjecting it. Furthermore, fat transplantation is best performed in several small sessions, rather than a single large one. Thus, a person needs to be more involved and more committed for a successful outcome.
Fat transplantation can enhance the results of BOTOX and/or a facelift, adding a softer contour to cheeks, eyes and lips.
