The major risk is that of infection, but with proper sterile technique the chance of this occurring is minimal. Swelling and bruising are the most common side effects of this procedure. Patients should also be aware that the procedure involves "overfilling" the treated area so that when the swelling subsides it looks improved. Without overfilling, there will not be sufficient correction. You may look swollen or "overdone" for a few days. In most cases, fat is extracted and injected in one visit. Some physicians take a large amount of donor fat, freeze it and use it at a later date. However, many plastic surgeons believe that this may create a greater risk of infection and also raises the possibility that fat may be mislabeled and injected into the wrong person.
