Permanent Makeup:
Questions to Ask Your Specialist
Since there are no uniform regulations for cosmetic tattooing, it's important to ask questions to find a specialist who is qualified and safety-conscious. Use the following checklists to help guide your search.

To assess the specialist's qualifications, ask:
  • How long have you been in the industry?
  • How many procedures have you performed?
  • Are you experienced in the procedure I'm interested in?
  • May I see your portfolio?
  • How many hours of training have you had?
  • May I see your certificate of training and continuing education?
To assess the specialist's sanitation practices, visit the procedure site and ensure that (the):
  • Specialist is neat, clean, and knowledgeable about environmental safety concerns.
  • Room is private and in an area free from other contaminants.
  • Clean sheets are used for each client.
  • New gloves are used for each client and changed during the procedure, when needed.
  • New, sterile needles are used for each client.
  • There is an autoclave-a heat sterilization machine regulated by the FDA-on the premises.
  • Needles and tubes are autoclaved after each client.
  • Non-autoclavable surfaces are cleaned with a disinfectant.
  • Used, absorbent tissues are placed in a special puncture-resistant, leak-proof container.
  • There is hot and cold running water somewhere other than the restroom.
Visit several specialists before making your final selection. If any specialist refuses to address your questions or tries to minimize your sanitation concerns, go elsewhere.
