| What Type of Facial Is Right for Me? |
| by Carla Perkins |
 |
Which kind of facial treatments can help the overall appearance of my skin? How often do I need to get them done?
To begin your adventure into skin care, I would recommend beginning with a standard European facial. You will find this listed on nearly every spa menu and can expect your skin to be cleansed thoroughly, analyzed, exfoliated, massaged, toned, and moisturized.
This type of facial introduces you to the spa environment and allows your therapist to become familiar with your skin. Through speaking with you and working on your skin, she can make recommendations for future appointments, as well as recommendations for home-maintenance (this is very important as it is done daily, whereas your treatments should occur every 6-8 weeks!). Your therapist should also offer information about lifestyle changes you can employ to achieve even further skin benefits.
If your skin has special problems or needs, inquire about some of the following treatments: Dry Skin - Paraffin Masques, Hydrating Masques (These include plant extracts and essential oils.) and Oxygen therapy Extremely Dry, Sundamaged, Aged Skin - Enzymatic and AHA exfoliant systems (Plant enzymes and alpha-hydroxy acids "digest" dead skin cells and speed cell renewal to retexture skin's surface and reduce fine lines.) -Vitamin Exfoliant Therapy (Multiple vitamins and soothing extracts exfoliate, retexturize, and reduce signs of premature and photo-aging.)
Sensitive Skin- Same treatment generally as in European Facial with gentle and soothing products and less heat, steam, and pressure. Acneic Skin - Thalassotherapy (Ingredients from the sea absorb excess oil and cleanse and detoxify.) - Extractions (Please DO NOT do this at home!!! Estheticians and Dermatologists use special products, procedures, and instruments to soften skin, dilate pores, and remove comedones without irritation and/or bruising or infection!)
Many spas offer other specialty treatments including, but certainly not limited to, eye treatments, firming masques, and even self-tanning. Be sure to inquire about what is offered in your area. Also, be aware of your overall state of well being. It is greatly reflected in your outer appearance - particularly in your hair, skin, and nails. Try the following tips to get started on a trip to a healthier you and you will certainly find improvement in your skin: Get more sleep. Exercise regularly. Drink more water. Use a sunscreen daily of at least SPF 15. Eat well-balanced meals. Reduce caffeine and alcohol consumption and be wary of diuretics and laxatives. Ingest more anti-oxidants.
Take advantage of the services and information to be found at your local day spa. I'm sure you will more than enjoy your time there and you will reap benefits both inside and out!
